What is counseling?
Counseling is a way  people can get support and help to manage distress.  A counselor can help a client  identify their options and the changes they can make to improve their emotional well-being, communication skills, self-esteem and negative behaviors.

Aren't people who go to counseling crazy?
No.  They are working to improve their lives, coping skills, relationships and habits.

What can I expect at my first session?
When you arrive at the office, you'll be asked for your photo id and insurance card (if using insurance).  Next you will be asked to complete various forms for things like insurance, HIPPA etc.  Once the session begins, you'll be asked some standard questions to help assess your situation and then you'll have the opportunity to discuss the situation that brought you in, how you feel and any concerns you may have.

How long does counseling take?

Counseling should last until the problem that brought you in is under control or resolved.  Some insurances may limit the number of sessions they'll pay for, so it is important to check with your plan if you are using medical benefits.
